Shân Smythe
BA (Hons), PGCE, FdA Therapeutic Counselling, Certificate in working with Couples.
I am a professional, qualified therapeutic counsellor working with individuals and couples in the Cotswolds.
I have a degree in Therapeutic Counselling and a Certificate in Working with Couples and am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, working in accordance with BACP’s Ethical Framework.
I have worked as a counsellor in Gloucestershire and Wiltshire, and gained experience in counselling charities before setting up in private practice. I now divide my time between working as part of a small team running a local counselling charity, and being with private clients.
I am warm, empathic and genuine. I provide a safe, confidential space where you can express yourself freely and process complex thoughts and feelings without fear of judgement. Whatever brings you to seek counselling, I will work hard to understand your goals and support you as you move towards resolution, relief or change.
By working integratively I can combine different counselling methods to suit your individual needs. I take a Person-Centred approach in all of my work. At the heart of this lies the premise that we can grow, change and reach our full potential, under the right conditions. My role is to help you do just that, by providing a safe, trusting environment in which you can really understand your experience, and identify and break down the barriers which may be preventing you from moving forwards. I also use Psychodynamic theory, looking at childhood experiences and the key relationships of our early years, which can have significant, often unconscious, influence over our thoughts, feelings and actions as adults. Working through unresolved issues of your past can help you live more freely in your present.
If I work with you as a couple I will help you look at your relationship as a system, understand how it is functioning, and identify and work through problem areas, or barriers to change and growth. I will facilitate compassionate discussion and mutual understanding to help you navigate challenges, and reach whatever resolution you feel works best for you and for your relationship.
People come to me for help with a wide range of issues. Common difficulties that can be supported through counselling include:
Abuse
Alcohol misuse
Anger
Anxiety

Childhood trauma
Coercive control

Depression
Emotional abuse
Grief and loss
Health anxiety

Counselling provides the unique opportunity to explore your thoughts, feelings, and behaviour in the presence of a trusted companion who fully understands and supports you, without judgement or agenda.
When we are under stress or in very challenging situations, it can be extremely difficult to see a way forward. Time, trust and understanding can generate flexibility of thought and enable real shifts in perspective.
Our minds can often feel like a jumbled mess of "stuff" that is impossible to sort through alone, no matter how hard we try. Voicing thoughts and feelings helps to bring clarity and relief.
Life is busy. We can get so caught up in meeting the needs of others, that we neglect our own, or lose sight of them altogether. Regular counselling carves out valuable, protected space and time to focus in on ourselves.
